Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a lot of maintenance?
Solar systems require very little maintenance once installed. A cleaning for each season will keep your panels working efficiently and safely. Outside of that there is no other maintenance involved.
Will the panels work when the power goes out?
Grid tied systems (the most common) will go out if your power goes out. This is due to safety for first responders. Grid tied systems are UL listed to not operate when the grid goes down. However, grid tied battery back up and off grid systems will immediately start up as would any other power generator that you may have.
Are the panels durable?
Solar panels are designed for snow loads, wind loads, and moderately sized hail. So they are durable, but not indestructible. They are built with aluminum frames and tempered glass that protect the panels from the elements.
What if I have a tornado or bad storm that damages my system?
Just like with any damage to your home or business you would need to make sure that you cover your system with insurance so that if this does happen you can file a claim to have them fixed or replaced.
How long will the system work?
Solar systems will continue running for 25+ years(that is how long they are warranted for). With certain components needing to be replaced at various intervals, such as inverters(warranty of 10 years) whose life span are 15 years or so. In fact panels built in the 60's are still working today.
Will my system still work when it is foggy or cloudy?
Yes, systems use light to produce electricity and we all know that we have gotten a slight burn on overcast days when light was getting thru. Same rule applies. You can expect a reduction in output from your system, but the system will be able to produce relative to how thick the cloud cover is.
Are Solar systems dangerous?
No. We use licensed professionals to install all electrical equipment per the NEC(National Electrical Code) so that your home and family are not in any danger. Please be aware that your installer should be licensed and certified so that your system meets all requirements for grounding and other safety measures.
Can a solar system add value to my home or business?
Yes. The system will add $20,000 to every $1,000 in electrical savings your home or business is able to offset. However, you will need to keep in mind that appraisal values will depend on comparables and may not be able to support that value fully if there are no comps in your area.
How long does it take to install?
Depending on the size of your system, you can assume that with good weather your system will be installed within one week. Your utility company will most likely take another 2-4 days to install the proper meter for completion of your solar system.
